A walk on the wild side: Oryza species as source for rice abiotic stress tolerance Genet. Mol. Biol.
Menguer,Paloma Koprovski; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Ricachenevsky,Felipe Klein.
Abstract Oryza sativa, the common cultivated rice, is one of the most important crops for human consumption, but production is increasingly threatened by abiotic stresses. Although many efforts have resulted in breeding rice cultivars that are relatively tolerant to their local environments, climate changes and population increase are expected to soon call for new, fast generation of stress tolerant rice germplasm, and current within-species rice diversity might not be enough to overcome such needs. The Oryza genus contains other 23 wild species, with only Oryza glaberrima being also domesticated. Rice domestication was performed with a narrow genetic diversity, and the other Oryza species are a virtually untapped genetic resource for rice stress tolerance...

Characterization of diploid Arachis interspecific hybrids for pest resistance Bragantia
Paula,Ailton Ferreira de; Dinato,Naiana Barbosa; Vigna,Bianca Baccili Zanotto; Fávero,Alessandra Pereira.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, the thrips (Enneothrips flavens Moulton) and rednecked peanutworm (Stegasta bosquella Chambers) are considered key pests for the peanut crop. Wild species show resistance to both of these pests, and can be used in breeding programs. The production of the sterile interspecific hybrids is necessary, which could be colchicine treated to get a synthetic amphidiploid with the same or similar genomic configuration of cultivated peanut. In this context, this study proposed the hybridization of wild pest-resistant species in 18 distinct combinations, obtaining the interspecific hybrids of Arachis and completing their characterization by (i) the reproductive characterization through pollen stainability with 2% acetocarmine (AC) solution with...

In vitro propagation of Rubus macrocarpus Benth. and Rubus bogotensis Kunth, as an ex situ conservation strategy Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Pérez-Martínez,Belkys Adriana; Castañeda-Garzón,Sandra Liliana.
Abstract This research aimed to evaluate techniques for in vitro multiplication and rooting and ex vitro adaptation of wild blackberry plants (Rubus bogotensis Benth. and Rubus macrocarpus Kunth). In in vitro phases, the influence of culture media was evaluated based on Murashige & Skoog (MS) composition, with or without a 50% reduction in salts, vitamins, and myo-inositol and supplemented or not with benzylaminopurine (BAP), indole acetic acid (IAA), L-cysteine, agar, peat, perlite, and vermiculite. The ex vitro phase was based on a soil, rice husks, peat, and perlite substrate management. After two months of evaluation of the in vitro phases, it was determined that the MS medium at 50% salts, vitamins, and myo-inositol and supplemented with sucrose...

Production and characterization of inter and intraspecific hybridization eggplant Horticultura Brasileira
Ghani,Muhammad A; Abbas,Muhammad M; Ziaf,Khurram; Azam,Muhammad; Ali,Basharat; Amjad,Muhammad; Anjum,Romana; Noor,Anam; Zahid,Mubashir.
ABSTRACT The eggplant is a highly valuable horticultural crop grown all over the world and it is of substantial economic importance in Asia. However, its production is severely threatened by several soil-borne and foliar diseases, insect-pests, drought, heat, and frost damage. Therefore, efforts to transfer useful resistance genes into eggplant from their wild relatives is important. In the present study, interspecific and intraspecific hybridization was carried out, that included three cultivated genotypes of eggplant (Solanum melongena MEE, Solanum melongena MEP, Solanum melongena MEB) and one wild Solanum species (Solanum incanum INC). The F1 hybrids were made by inter and intraspecific hybridization. A total of 632 possible inter and intraspecific...

Transferability and use of microsatellite markers for the genetic analysis of the germplasm of some Arachis section species of the genus Arachis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bravo,Juliana Pereira; Hoshino,Andrea Akemi; Angelici,Carla Maria Lara C.D.; Lopes,Catalina Romero; Gimenes,Marcos Aparecido.
The Arachis section is the most important of the nine sections of the genus Arachis because it includes the cultivated peanut, Arachis hypogaea. The genetic improvement of A. hypogaea using wild relatives is at an early stage of development in spite of their potential as sources of genes, including those for disease and pests resistance, that are not found in the A. hypogaea primary gene pool. Section Arachis species germplasm has been collected and maintained in gene banks and its use and effective conservation depends on our knowledge of the genetic variability contained in this material. Microsatellites are routinely used for the analysis of genetic variability because they are highly polymorphic and codominant. The objective of this study was to...
